12 Step Program Resources
A twelve-step program as defined by Wikipedia is "..a
set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from
addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems." Originally
proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism
it soon gained worldwide acceptance. For the addict, the process involves:
- admitting that he/she cannot control their addiction
or compulsion;
- recognizing that a higher power can give strength;
- examining past errors with the help of a others;
- making amends for past behavior problems;
- learning to live a new life with new behavior patterns;
- helping others who suffer from the same addictions.
